Ashwagandha is one of the most treasured herbs of Ayurveda, India's ancient system of traditional wellness, which has used it for more than 3,000 years. Its Sanskrit name means "smell of the horse". This refers both to the root's earthy aroma and to the old belief that it gives the strength and vigour of a horse. Ashwagandha is sometimes called "Indian ginseng" or "winter cherry", and it's a hardy little shrub of the nightshade family. It also grows wild in parts of Southern Africa, where it has its own place in local traditional plant use. In Ayurveda it's classed as a rasayana, a rejuvenating tonic for strength and balance, and today it's one of the best-known adaptogens in the world. These capsules contain a 15:1 root concentrate, which means 15 parts of dried root go into every 1 part of extract. That brings more of the plant's natural compounds into each small capsule.

Usage

Take 1 to 3 capsule daily with water and a meal.

Many people find it best taken in the evening, as it can be calming.

Consistent daily use over several weeks works best.

Ashwagandha may raise thyroid hormone levels. Do not use if you have an overactive thyroid or other thyroid condition, or take thyroid medication, unless your doctor approves.

Do not use if you have an autoimmune condition (such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, MS or Hashimoto's) or take immune-suppressing medication, unless your doctor approves.

May cause drowsiness. Do not drive if affected, and do not combine with alcohol, sleeping tablets, sedatives, benzodiazepines or other calming products.

Liver: rare cases of liver injury have been reported with ashwagandha. Do not use if you have a liver condition. Stop use and see a doctor straight away if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual tiredness or pain in the upper abdomen.

Ashwagandha may lower blood sugar and blood pressure. If you have diabetes or take blood-sugar or blood-pressure medication, speak to your doctor before use.

Do not use if you have, or have had, prostate cancer or another hormone-sensitive condition, or take hormone medication, unless your doctor approves.

Speak to your doctor before use if you take antidepressants or other psychiatric medication, or have stomach ulcers.

Stop at least two weeks before any surgery.

Avoid if you are allergic to plants in the nightshade family (such as tomatoes, potatoes, peppers or aubergine).

Do not combine with other products containing Ashwagandha, such as Thyrotone or PMS.

Stop use and seek advice if you experience drowsiness, stomach upset, diarrhoea, a racing heart, restlessness, rash or any other unexpected reaction.
